Gladiator II : I didn’t like the first one either (sorry)
I need to say this upfront: I didn’t like Gladiator (yes, I know, please sit down ant take a chill pill). So maybe this was doomed from the start.
Still, I really wanted to love Gladiator II. I love Ridley Scott. Alien. Covenant. Prometheus. Thelma & Louise. Blade Runner. The man knows how to build worlds, moods, images that stick to your bones.
But this? This felt… lazy.
The story is almost a copy-paste of the first filM. Same emotional beats. Same trajectory. Same “look how tragic and noble this man is” structure, just rearranged slightly enough to pretend it’s new. I kept thinking : haven’t we already done this?
And the worst part is that I wanted it to work. I really did. I went to the theater ready to be convinced, ready to be swept away, ready to finally be a part of the Gladiator community.
But let’s be honest though. I didn’t go for the story. I went for Joseph Quinn. Big screen. Roman excess. You get it.
And, somehow, history repeated itself. Because just like in the first Gladiator, the only thing that truly held my attention were the emperors. Especially Geta. Every time they were on screen, the film suddenly had teeth. Cruelty. Chaos. The emperors are unhinged, theatrical, fascinating, and they completely outshine the main narrative.
Which only made the rest of the film feel even flatter by comparison. Gladiator II isn’t offensively bad. It’s worse than that. It’s disappointing.
A film that should have been furious and decadent feels cautious and repetitive. A sequel that mistakes familiarity for depth. I left the theater not devastated, just vaguely annoyed.
But hey.
If nothing else, Gladiator II confirmed one thing : give me unhinged emperors or don’t bother.
At least Geta was there.
